ethical governance commitments

Because of the broad range of artistic approaches and practices, a universal code of ethical conduct for artists, while potentially useful, is problematic and inherently oppressive. To combat these dynamics OTV has developed a set of commitments (Ethical Governance) and agreements (Brave Space) that provide opportunities for various artistic disciplines to thrive while also being held responsible and accountable for their actions as they cultivate manifestations that speak to their humanity. While applicable in many contexts, these codes of ethics and community agreements) engagement//bravespaceagreementshave been designed to breathe life into honest dialogue, generative conflict, and sustained resistance against harmful systems and therefore should not be enshrined as universally applicable unless agreed upon by all parties.

Ethical Governance Commitments (Code of Ethics):

  • I commit to using my artistic practice to amplify the power of storytelling through cinema in a way that centers and honors the experiences that are often missing from mainstream media.

  • I commit to create the best work(s) I can, using the time, knowledge and tools I have available and complete those work(s) to the best of my ability.

  • I commit to learning, sharing and practicing my craft in a way that nourishes me and the communities that I belong to.

  • I commit to help others when I can with those things I know and to not pretend I know something when I don't.

  • I commit to establishing, honoring and communicating my personal, creative and professional boundaries with the people that I engage.

  • I commit to not make less of my own or another's work and to not damage other artists’ practice, reputation or status in service of elevating my own.

  • I commit to give advice to those who ask for it and to keep my advice constructive and helpful.

  • I commit to not condone the theft of another’s work, and will always legally obtain, license and credit work that was not originally created or produced by me.

  • I commit to get the proper releases and permissions I need for my work as required.

  • I commit to treat those around me with respect, courtesy, and understanding, and to help them understand the filmmaking process and its terminology.

  • I commit to not permit unauthorized photos, shots, sound recordings, or information given to me in confidence, to be passed on to anyone for any reason.

  • I commit to not condone any form of discrimination of any artist includibing but not limited to their race, color, religion, creed, age, sex, or national origin.

  • I commit to learning more about my practice and how it can be used to bring about more intentional, relevant and accurate representation in the media.

  • I commit to acknowledging the privilege(s) that I’ve amassed and will actively and consciously engage in practices that dismantle potential harm
